Water hyacinth fiber products project
The water hyacinth is an aquatic plant from the pontederia family. The plant is native to South America. The lilac flowers resemble those of the hyacinth, but the plants are not related. Each leaf base is thickened into an air-filled sponge-like sphere. As a result, the water hyacinth has a high buoyancy.
The fiber made from the water hyacinth are very strong and last long when used in products like bags, sandals, hats and many other.
Using the water hyacinth fibers works two ways: the plant is growing fast and often overgrows ponds and lakes. Water buffalo eat the plant, but they cannot keep up with the fast growth. Using the plant for all kind of products helps to stop the overgroth and also results in strong lasting products.
Like many other products most water hyacinth fiber products are made by small family businesses and when sold they benefit directly from the sale. Below you find an overview of all kind of products made from water hyacinth fibers (click on picture to enlarge).
We are looking for interested parties to import these products to Europe. For more information please contact us through info@thailand-foundation.com (click on pictures to enlarge)
